Topic: unregistered dosent mean not qualified.

I have been working here for 6 months in Perth, and i am a registered ODP in the uk.

Where i work there are 2 of us from the uk.

( bit of a moan here) we are both on 457 visas for 4 years, sponsered by our employers.
Nurses can get PR on ESN but we carnt so its either apply for a renewal at the end of 4 years or go back to the UK.

Different country same issues, unregistered dosent mean not qualified.
I really hope that this will change in the future.

Your wish is our mission and changes are on the way..

Good news for all 457 visa holders.

At a recent meeting between AOTP executive members and representatives of the federal minister for immigration, a local solution was proposed.

That is: It is possible for individual hospitals to apply for their staff to be given permanent residency using a state labour agreement. It can be negotiated for the entry of overseas workers to work in Australia where the business can demonstrate that there is a labour
market need and there are no appropriately qualified Australian workers readily available.

Employers seeking access to a labour agreement need to provide a
comprehensive submission to the Australian Government, represented by the
Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). The merits of each
submission are considered by DIAC on a case-by-case basis.

We have also been discussing this issue with the WA health department, who have been very supportive.  WA health are currently compiling a whole of health submission to Department of Immigration asking for Anaesthesia Technicians to be added to the immigration demand list.  This is obviously our ultimate goal with the state labour agreement as our fall back position.

Now for the hard sell.  The AOTP executive have worked tirelessly for the 457 Visa holders cause, in their own time, and have achieved a good local result on their behalf, with possibly a better one on the horizon. It is time for the 457 visa holders to repay the effort, by ensuring they are all members of our society.  The negotiating strength of our society is in its membership numbers. We have a strong, capable committee, committed to helping our members as we have shown.

Hi Roy
I am currently trying to re-apply on a 457 visa.  I dont anticipate any problems, however, I'm interested in the labour agreement you mention above.
Is this just available in Western Australia?  Do you have any more information regarding this?
I really appreciate all that you are doing to get Anaesthetic Technicians registered, and on the skills list.  My fingers are all crossed!
Thanks

Hi Alison,

If you don't mind me asking....Which state are you in?

I'm sure Roy W will be along to confirm whether the State Labour Agreement is Australia wide or WA specific....

However, reading between the lines of the following more comprehensive post, one can assume it is countrywide if the Federal Minister of Immigration, Chris Evans is involved...can't be sure though.

I'm working in Sydney.  I have just read the more recent post from Roy about immigration.  It certainly is seeming more positive.
