What is AOTP?
AOTP is The Association of Operating Theatre Practitioners formerly WASAT the Western Australian Society of Anaesthesia Technicians. The society was established in 1972 to unite Anaesthesia Technicians throughout Western Australia.

What is an Anaesthesia Technician?
A health professional who is responsible for anaesthetic areas and equipment. They have detailed knowledge of anaesthetic procedures, equipment and drugs. They are also familiar with the full range of surgical procedures and are responsible for setting up the anaesthetic area for the Anaesthetist in preparation for the intended surgery.
Over the years the role has extended and encompasses a wide range of specialised equipment including IABP(Intra Aortic Balloon Pump Counterpulsation) and Cell Saver. A good description and information of the varied roles can be researched HERE
When patients are brought into the anaesthetic area, the technician must provide skilled assistance to the Anaesthetist during the induction, maintenance and emergence from anaesthesia. Anaesthesia Technicians are directly responsible to the Anaesthetist. Their relationship to the Anaesthetist is exactly comparable to that of the theatre scrub nurse to the surgeon.
What are our Training Guidelines?
Recommended training is set down by the AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND COLLEGE OF ANAESTHETISTS (ANZCA) RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE ASSISTANT FOR THE ANAESTHETIST - 2008

Code of Ethics
All members of the Society are required to abide by the following Code of Ethics which have been promoted not only for the benefit of members, but for the protection and safety of the patient.

Carry out duties with skill, care and judgment in such a way so as to promote and protect the rights and well being of the patient.

Confidentiality of the patient shall be respected and maintained at all times.

Be aware of and have respect for all professional persons associated with the provision of patient care.

Recognize any limitations of competency and never undertake delegated tasks without first receiving instruction which will facilitate the duties to be carried out in a professional and capable manner.

Endeavour to achieve and maintain a high standard of professional care and to impart such knowledge to fellow members.
- Provide and maintain the highest standards of patient care in accordance with hospital and health policy guidelines.
